April 12-20 Spring (we hope!) Break
Monday, May 2 School will be held! This is another in-service that has been eliminated to make up for snow days. Originally scheduled as Teacher In-Service days, we have opted to hold a regular school day to make up for the numerous snow days, and to do our best to not bring students back to school during the week of June 23.

UPCOMING EVENTS
1. All are invited to our 4th Annual Talent Show, Friday April 4th 7:00-9:00p in the RMS Auditorium ($2.00 admission). There are 25 acts with some serious talent and fun on display!
2. 6th Grade Movie Night has been rescheduled to Friday April 11th 6:30-8:30, $2.00 admission to cover prizes and snacks.
3. The Children Helping Children Penny War & Money Drive for the Selamta children in Ethiopia will end tomorrow at noon. Please remind your children to bring in anything they can for the final day. Bills and checks add to the homeroom's generosity count and will help 8th grader Bethlehem Foster and Jody Horan, 8th grade teacher and CHC leader, to build home libraries in the 5 family homes for about 80 children during their upcoming trip. Thank you so very much.
4. A reminder that donations are hugely appreciated for the weekly Monday Morning Teacher and Staff breakfast. In the absence of a PTO, this is an opportunity for Richmond parents to express their appreciation and support for all who help our children. Please contact Elizabeth Cornell (elcornell@yahoo.com) or Louise Cullen (Louise.Cullen@quecheeclub.com) if you can bake something or send juice, yogurt or another breakfast treat to brighten Monday mornings in the staff lounge.

Employers Needed for Operation Day's Work
Operation Day's Work (ODW) is a student-run organization at Hanover High School that promotes international solidarity and students working to raise money for an international aid cause. This year, ODW is supporting the Kigutu Community Health Center in Burundi. Run by the Hanover, New Hampshire-based Village Health Works, the health center provides essential primary care for up to 20,000 people in and around the rural, mountainous village of Kigutu, Burundi. Burundi is the world's poorest country, and the Kigutu region has the second highest HIV infection rate in the nation. With its community-based approach, the health center involves the people of Kigutu in construction, staffing the health clinic, health care training, and disease education.
ODW's major fundraiser is an annual workday. On the workday, Hanover High School students are excused from school to do odd jobs for members of their community and are paid $7 per hour. All of the money they make will go to the health center. The workday will be held on Wednesday, May 14 from 8 AM to noon. ODW is hoping to expand this year to have over two hundred students work, so more employers are needed. If you would like to hire students to do yard work, office work, or housework at your home or business, or if you would like more information, please contact ODW student leader Helen Jack at helen.jack@dartmouth.edu. Requests for student workers must be received by April 14.
Hanover School Board Vacancy
The Hanover School Board is looking for someone to fill a vacant seat. They will be happy to accept applications until the day of the meeting, Tuesday, April 9. Applicants must be registered Hanover voters. Letters (or emails) of interest can be sent to Wayne.Gersen@sau70.org.
RELATIONSHIP WITH PEERS group now forming for girls in grades 6-8. This group will enhance girls' awareness of their relationships with themselves and others. Themes include "Expressing Myself," "Accepting Different Parts of Myself," "Giving Voice to Feelings," and "Girlfights or Girlfriends." The groups are conducted in a very interactive and engaging manner and will center around various activities. The curriculum is based on the nationwide Girls Circle program and 2007 research suggests that participants pick friends that treat them well and are able to see beyond girls' reputations. There is also an increase in school attachment and self-efficacy and a decrease in rates of alcohol use amongst other findings. Additional outcomes and information are available at www.girlscircle.com. Group will be co-led by Laurie Rosen, MSW and Teri LaRock, MSW, both pediatric social workers at DHMC.
Dates: Beginning Thursday April 24 and continuing for 8 weeks
Time: 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Place: Tracy Hall
Fee: $160.00

For additional information and/or sign up, please contact Laurie at 649-1919.

PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Food for thought: A team of psychologists has compiled the data on cooperative vs individual classroom models from the last several decades. The culmination included research involving more than 17,000 adolescents aged 12 - 15 years from 11 countries.  Their findings: students in classrooms that supported cooperative learning (group projects, group study, group prep for exams) not only had better peer relationships, they scored higher on academic tests and scored higher on tests for problem-solving, reasoning and critical thinking.  Students from classrooms that supported individual and/or competitive work, still maintained their social friendships, but their academic scores were lower and scores on problem solving and critical-thinking were poorer.  Roseth, C., et al. (2008) Psychological Bulletin, Vol 134(2).
